Pool Opening and Closing in Central Illinois

Closed right in the fall, opened clean in the spring. Winterization planned around the freeze cycles we actually get here — for pools we built and pools we didn't.

Closings are a freeze problem, not a cleaning problem

A central Illinois winter is hard on a pool in one specific way: water left in the wrong place expands when it freezes. That is what a closing is actually about. Clearing the plumbing lines and getting them protected, draining and protecting the equipment, handling the water level correctly for your pool, and getting the cover on properly so you are not fighting debris and ice in spring.

The visible parts — balancing the water, treating it, covering it — matter too, because water sitting all winter out of balance is harder to bring back in April. But the part that prevents expensive damage is the part nobody sees: the lines and the equipment pad.

If a closing is done carelessly, you usually do not find out in November. You find out at the spring opening, when something that was full of water in January does not hold pressure.

Openings decide how the first month of the season goes

A spring opening is a startup, not just a cover removal. Circulation comes back online, the equipment gets checked before it is asked to run all season, and the water gets brought into balance deliberately rather than by dumping chemicals and hoping. Getting the chemistry right at startup is most of the difference between a clear season and spending June chasing algae.

It is also the right moment to catch problems while they are cheap. A seal that is weeping, a heater that did not come through the winter, a pump that is louder than it was — all of it is easier to address before the pool is in daily use, and before the calendar fills with everybody else who waited.

We service pools we did not build

You do not have to be a Custom Pools customer for us to open, close, repair or maintain your pool. A good share of our seasonal work is on pools built by other companies, including ones whose builder is no longer around or no longer answering.

We work across Mahomet, Champaign, Urbana, Savoy, Monticello, Rantoul and Clinton. If something is wrong mid-season rather than at a changeover, that is a repair request, and the quote form routes it to the right place.

Opening and closing FAQs

When should I close my pool in central Illinois?

Once water temperatures have dropped and stayed down for the season, and before hard freezes arrive. Closing while the water is still warm invites algae growth under the cover; waiting until a deep freeze risks damage to lines and equipment. Contact us as the season winds down and we will get you on the schedule.

What does a pool closing include?

Clearing and protecting the plumbing lines, draining and protecting the equipment, handling the water level appropriately for your pool, balancing and treating the water for the winter, and getting the cover on correctly. The line and equipment work is the part that prevents freeze damage.

Can you open or close a pool you didn't install?

Yes. We do seasonal work on pools built by other companies throughout central Illinois, including pools whose original builder is no longer in business.

What happens at a spring opening?

The cover comes off and the pool is brought back online: circulation restored, equipment checked before it has to run all season, and water chemistry brought into balance deliberately. It is also when we catch anything that did not survive the winter, while it is still a small repair.

Do you offer service contracts or one-off visits?

Both. Some owners want routine maintenance handled for them, others just want the two changeovers and a number to call when something breaks. Tell us which you are and we will scope it that way.
